Huna is the original
art and science of healing and spiritual (not religious) development
of the ancient Hawaiian people which is still practiced today to
help people empower themselves and take control of their lives.
Part of Huna is philosophy, part is healing of
the mind, body, and spirit, and part of it is a healthy code of
behavior that allows you to take control of your life and live your
life to its fullest. Huna in Hawaiian means secret
because for the longest time after the arrival of the missionaries
in Hawaii in 1820, all of the ancient Hawaiian teachings and philosophies
were forbidden and the Hawaiians continued their practices but kept
them secret from outsiders. The Two Session Solution of Hollywood/Fort
Lauderdale and North Miami, Florida, uses Huna in
addition to other methods of therapy as needed.
Some interesting facts that about the ancient Hawaiians
who practiced Huna:
- Mental disease was virtually unknown in Hawaii prior to 1820
with the arrival of the missionaries.
- The ancient Hawaiians did not need therapists because of their
philosophy of being in harmony and one with the people and the
world around them.
In Hawai’i, Huna was originally
known as Ho’omana, “Ho’o” to make and “Mana” or
life force energy. Mana is equivalent to Ki as in Aikido, Chi as
in Tai Chi, or Shaki or Prana in Sanskrit.
Many aspects of Huna are common
in most spiritual systems including Buddism, Reiki, Wicca, Native
American, and Kabala.
Some of the basic precepts of Huna include:
- Being in touch with yourself and being in harmony with yourself
and others including your own past.
- To gain maximum personal power, take responsibility for everything
that happens to you in your universe.
- Energy is just energy, it is how we perceive it that makes a
difference.
- Focus on what you want not on what you don’t want
- Perception is projection—part of this is we see what we
want to see and we tend to project our own faults onto others.
- We have four “bodies”: physical, mental, emotional,
and spiritual
Here is an exercise of Huna called
Hakalau that is very easy and quick to do and immediately helps
you to relax and calm yourself:
1. |
While sitting down, look straight
ahead and raise your eyes up so your field of vision seems to
bump up against your eyebrows but not so high as to cut off
the field of vision. |
2. |
Focus on one spot for 30 seconds to two minutes
and notice that as you hold your focus there, your vision begins
to spread out and you see more in your peripheral vision then
in the central part of your vision. |
3. |
Remain in this state for another minute or
two. (If you want to practice a form of meditation you can hold
this focus longer and allow your mind to wander.) |
4. |
Relax your focus back down and notice how calm
you feel. This is a neurological phenomenon that helps to quiet
and calm the mind. In addition, when you hold your eye focus
in that particular position, you will be unable to hold a negative
thought or emotion in your mind. You can THINK of it but you
cannot FEEL it. |
